101 Great Gifts from Kids by Stephanie R. Mueller et al
This is a fun, creative book. I initially ordered it for my child's preschool teacher as an end of the year gift, but school ended before it arrived. When it came, I decided to keep it for my family. Should have ordered two copies and taken one to the teacher this summer. There are some familiar ideas with new twists (paper weights, picture frames), but also lots of ideas new to me (tube sock duster, fabric wall hanging using pastels and food coloring). I have two girls (teenager and a kindergartener) and have helped their teachers with arts and crafts throughout years of preschool and elementary school, scouts and bible school. I thought I'd seen every kids' craft idea there was, until I saw this book. My teenager loves to help her little sister with crafts, and there are loads of new ideas in this book to keep them busy. Some ideas are messy, most are neat and tidy, using common household things available on a rainy day with little or no planning ahead required. I love this book and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone whose children love to do crafts. The joy little ones feel when presenting someone with a special handmade gift is priceless, and these ideas make the recipient really take notice!!!!!! NOT your everyday repeats. Great for teachers, scout leaders, moms, big sisters and brothers, Sunday school teachers, and even an interested dad or two. But, it's best for little hands that love to create. Buy it. It is a wealth of information for the price.

Priceless Gifts
In an era of self-help books and publications of financial advice, Mueller and Wheeler have written about a subject that will add REAL value to our lives - how to spend time with our children. Discarded household items and time can be combined and leveraged into shared accomplishments.

As the title indicates, over one hundred projects are described; each one taking a page or two. The needed materials are listed and "helpful hints" follow the instructions. The illustrations are not only instructive but will also generate enthusiasm in a youthful co-worker by showing the finished product.

This book can be used for individuals or groups. (I know of a congregation that organized Mother's Day and Father's Day activities for over twenty children around these gift-making suggestions.)

The dusters and cards you make won't last forever, but the memories will.

Alberto Pinto: Classics
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (June, 2002)
Authors: Philippe Renand and William Wheeler
Average review score:

A Classic!
I also do own a lot of books on interior design, and when it comes to looking in to the opulent french style, this is a book to own. Even if you are not going to do a room like the ones he does (which I suppose is extremely rare) his ways which objects, placement of furniture, various kind of traditional pieces, combination of textures and colors will give very good direction for working with this kind of inspiration, rather than the usual more country/cotteny feel so often done by others. His illustrations are very detailed, leaves you wondering if they were done before (as a service to his clients) or after the room was finished. (For himself, I suppose). A book to own.

An Exquisite Book
I have an extraordinarily large library of books on interior design books and this one equals or surpasses the very best. The number and quality of the photos are without parallel. The book represents the very best in haute European design. Pinto's work now is rivaled only by Peter Marino's, others of this genre having died. The average homemaker looking for ideas to freshen up the family room will not find them here. But for anyone interested in seeing what perfection of detail looks like -- in upholstery, curtains, garniture, and the like -- every page of this book will show them. It is worth every penny of the price and should be in every interior designer's collection, if only to inform them and their clients of what superior upholstery design and lush color can do for a room.

All Because of Polly
Published in Paperback by Selah Publishing Group (01 September, 2002)
Author: Ruric E. Wheeler
Average review score:

Rural Kentucky, Depression, World War II, Love Story
This book presents, first-hand, the author's views of rural Kentucky during the Depression and the hard times following, along with the making of guys from all backgrounds into the GIs who won World War II. But most of all, it is a love story, that of a young man and young woman, in love with each other and with their God. And it is the most spritually uplifting love story that I have ever read.

A Jaunt Back in Time
This book will bring back fond memories to all the servicemen and their sweethearts who courted during World War II. It captures the separation and the hope of love during difficult times.

Animals in Cross Stitch
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles Uk (May, 1995)
Authors: Jayne Netley-Mayhew, Nicki Wheeler, and Jayne Netley Mayhew
Average review score:

LifeLike images
A great book for Cross stitchers. Many images reflecting a real life image of several animals, including the walking tiger as on the cover, elephant, zebra, ducks and other birds and some smaller animals as well. Different designs in various sizes make for a well balanced book for projects

Very detailed depictions of animals
This book has some really beautiful projects, with very realistic and detailed portraits of many different kinds of animals. Projects in particular that appealed to me were the first project, which was a reproduction of a cave painting, and the gibbon hanging from a tree.

There are very detailed charts, with DMC color suggestions, and beautiful color photographs for inspiration. There are also many ideas for how to finish the projects and make them into lovely gifts.

I thought this was a wonderful book, one I would highly recommend to any needleworker who loves animals!

Bel Air (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))

Bel Air by Katherine Stone
Bel Air is definitely one of Katherine Stone's best. It is one of her older books and takes place in the mid 1980's with all of the lavish opulence one could expect from California Socialites. If you like any of her books, this one you will simply adore.

First Class Romance!
This is the first book by Katherine Stone I have read. Now, I a lifetime fan. This story follow three women in their journey towards their career goals and love. I love the way the story links the lives of the characters together. How the chance meetings and circumstances changes the lives of the unsuspecting cast. The changes are so subtle that they don't realize what hit them until their deeply in love and can't do a thing about it. This is a wonderful book, that I will read over and over again.

Best Book and Pictures
We have some of Noel paintings, they are so beautiful.
The Angel paintings are so very special, they will make
you cry just looking at their faces. Mr. Sissons'
poems fit everyone of the pictures. Enjoyed the book very
much looking to buy 2 more books.

Believe
This book was so beautifully illustrated that it brought tears to my eyes.

In each poem I found a different one of my sisters, friends or daughters. I have already bought 4 copies and am looking for 3 more so I can give my sisters and daugthers each a copy in honor of "their" angel.

Betrayal: The Story of Aldrich Ames, an American Spy (Wheeler Large Print Books (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (April, 1996)
Authors: Tim Weiner, David Johnston, and Neil A. Lewis
Average review score:

Excellent resource on Counter-Intelligence Weaknesses
This is a very readable book on Espionage and especially demonstrates the weaknesses in our Counter-Intelligence system.

The CIA takes the heat in this book but this story demonstrates an inherint weakness in our security within ALL agencies involved in dealing with sensitive issues.

I felt this book was well written and recommend it to anyone who wants to try and understand how this could have happened.

Precise & Thorough
I've read every book on the Aldrich Ames case (including a new one that recently came out) and I must say that this book was the most difficult one to put down. The story reads like one you would expect from professional journalists -- well documented, precise, and interesting from beginning to end. If I had to recommend one book on this pathetic case of espionage, it would be a "no-brainer" -- get _Betrayal_!!

Bookstore Cat

Author: Cindy Wheeler
Average review score:

A fun storybook.
BOOKSTORE CAT is a nice little story with colorful, fun pictures full of interest. And a surprisingly good plot for a learn-to-read book! The author has obviously had a personal relationship with a cat, as she's captured Mulligan's personality and "priorities" very well. What intrigues me is the whole concept of "Step into Reading" books. This is a Step 1 book for the earliest readers. (There are four steps.) If you're new to them, as I am, let me tell you there are a LOT of titles in the series (listed at the back of the book). Some are Sesame Street books, Thomas the Tank Engine, Arthur, and more. If you have a preschooler, you might want to look into these.

One More Time, Mommy....PLEASE!
This is a GREAT book for kids - my 18 month old daughter LOVES this book and I am lucky if I can get through pre-nap time or pre-bed time reading without having to read this book aloud more than three times.

The book is written so that there is the right amount of text and pictures on each page to hold a small attention span captive long enough to read the entire book. My daughter enjoys and understands the plot, the protagonist/antagonist characters, and happily points out the mommys, babies and animals; she especially likes shaking her little finger and saying "No no no" and "uh oh" to the character in the story who tries to enter the bookstore.

This book is also good to use as a tool for exposing a child to a second language; I can easily point to things and ask my daughter to show me the gato, the libro, the ventana, etc.

If you are looking for a book that is the next step after board books for younger children OR a first step with a beginning reader....this is it!

Happy reading and remember.....every book store needs a Bookstore Cat!

Born Naked (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (September, 1994)
Author: Farley Mowat
Average review score:

Born Naked is one of the most amazing books around.
Canadian author Farley Mowat's Born Naked is a must-read glimpse into the author's much self-written about life. It's hilarious, it's poignant and a must for any Mowat fan.

If Only My Childhood Was Like His....
I've been a big fan of Farley Mowat's literary style since I first read Never Cry Wolf back in junior high school. Even as a 9th grade Earth Science teacher, I show the silver screen adaptation of this great novel. Born Naked, however, is of different 'stuff' than Never Cry Wolf. Here is a book written in a light, easy-to-read fashion that highlights his early years in this great world. We, the readers, are along for the ride when he travels to the Arctic on a research mission with his uncle, or when he makes his daily rounds to inspect the nests of local birds in Saskatchewan. This book is written in a truly entrancing style. I had a very difficult time putting it down. There are some questionable portions in it dealing with his discovery of his own sexuality, but they are far outweighed by the sense of awe and discovery he felt as a youngster. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, or anyone that wants to experience the childhood they only dreamed about

Brothers in Arms

Author: Wheeler
Average review score:

Native brother search for cultural and family identity
"Brothers in Arms" is a collection of three short novellas written by Jordan Wheeler, that deal with the stuggles of brotherhood. Wheeler defines the essence of the Metis people through his short stories of brothers and their relationships to eachother and their culture. Wheeler recreates the struggles of survival that the Metis people have delt with for centuries. "Brothers in Arms" allows readers to understand the history and beliefs of the Metis. Each of the three stories focuses on an evil that has long oppressed the Metis. "Exposure" deals with the horrible burdens of sexual abuse sustained by children at mandatory,Cathlioc-run boarding schools. "Red Waves" is a story of Native brothers who find themselves on different sides of the law. Historical oppressors such as, The Hudson's Bay Company, Labatt Breweries and the Cathlioc church are bombing targets for a Native Terrorist group. "Hearse in Snow" highlights how alcohol has torn families apart. "Brothers in Arms" reveals the remarkable strenth and unity of the Metis and their ability to overcome the many obstacles they encounter. "Brothers in Arms" provides an indepth look at the lifestyle, unity and identity of Native people and is a worthwhile selection for teenagers regardless of culture.

Native brothers and communties in 3 novellas by young Cree
Three novellas of modern Native life -- each focussing on Native brothers -- by Canadian Cree writer Jordan Wheeler. High appeal to teenagers, especially young men, though not written as YA. "Hearse in Snow" was dramatized for the CBC series "Inside Stories" (not shown in US). Two brothers are taking their father's corpse home for burial when a snowstorm traps them for a night in the hearse. They pass the stormy night reliving their childhood memories of each others' lives and of their father. In "Red Waves" two brothers are caught on opposite sides of a Native Liberation struggle where the militant group one brother belongs to is going to blow up a government facility where the other has friends working. "Exposure" explores AIDS, its effect both on the brothers (one of whom is exposed) and on the Native community they belong to. In all the stories, Wheeler shows both the brothers who are the focus of each story and the Native communities -- Reserve and urban -- to which they belong. 224 pages.
